Invitation of foreign visitors

Would you like to invite visitors who need a visa to enter the country?

Then you must submit a declaration of commitment in person to the immigration office at your main place of residence.

  • Valid passport or identity card
  • Employees: wage or salary statements for the last three months (also for secondary employment); spouse's income can be added if necessary.
  • Pensioners: current pension statement
  • Self-employed persons and freelancers: current tax assessment (preferably not older than two years) and additional current proof of assets or income, e.g. confirmation of your profit and loss account (for the past three months) from a tax consultant.
  • Other regular income from renting and leasing: current tax assessment notice and current bank statements showing rental and leasing income.
  • From investment income: current tax assessment notice and current financial status or custody account statements.
  • If you have taken out travel health insurance for the guest in Germany, a copy of the insurance policy.

Note: Further documents may be required in individual cases.

  • Surname, first name(s)
  • Date of birth, place of birth
  • Nationality
  • Residential address in home country
  • Copy of passport
  • Date of expected entry and start of obligation
  • Purpose of stay
  • As a host or hostess, you must live in Germany. If you have a temporary residence permit for Germany, this must be valid for longer than the duration of the obligation. In addition, legal entities based in Germany can also submit a declaration of commitment.
  • You must send the declaration of commitment (in the original) to your guest for forwarding to the German embassy or consulate general in their home country for the visa application. The guest also needs travel health insurance for Germany. The original insurance certificate must be submitted to the German diplomatic mission abroad. Travel health insurance can be taken out abroad or by you in Germany.
  • The declaration of commitment is issued for the period of the purpose of the stay (for example, for the language course, study preparation, university application, studies, doctorate and subsequent job search).
  • A declaration of commitment can only be revoked if you can find someone else to take on your obligation or if your guest can prove that their livelihood is secured in another way. The foreigners authority must be informed of the revocation in writing. As long as your guest is unable to provide new and sufficient financing, you are still obliged to cover the costs incurred.

With your signature on the declaration of commitment, you are liable for the livelihood of your guest from abroad, including the fulfillment of all basic needs such as food, clothing and housing, as well as for care in the event of illness and the need for care, even if the expenses are based on a legal claim of the foreigner. The obligation also includes the costs of departure (e.g. flight ticket) and the costs of forced termination of residence, such as deportation (sections 66 and 67 of the Residence Act). This also includes transportation and travel costs to the foreign destination, including any necessary escort, translation and catering costs as well as other costs. This obligation is generally irrevocable and applies for the entire duration of the guest's stay in Germany, but for a maximum period of five years after entry. The declaration of commitment does not expire before then, neither through the granting of a humanitarian residence permit nor through recognition under asylum law (sections three and four of the Asylum Act).

An appointment to collect the declaration of commitment in person will be arranged when the application is submitted. If all the necessary documents are available and the requirements are met, processing will take around 4 to 6 weeks.
