14.03.2022 - Census 2022 starts soon - Reliable database is important - City asks for registration
Register when you move in!
The 2022 census will take place this year. The census is a national survey to determine how many people live, live and work in the individual municipalities in the Federal Republic of Germany.
The survey phase starts on May 16. Approximately ten percent of the population will be randomly selected and surveyed. The Federal and State Statistical Offices will initially obtain existing data from the administrative registers. The addresses selected by a random generator are generated from all addresses in the area using a mathematical-statistical procedure. All information on the census can be found at www.zensus2022.de.
In order for the registration and administrative registers to be a solid basis for the census, the stored data must be reliable. This includes people registering with their city when they move into a home. What many people do not know: There is a legal obligation to do so. The Federal Registration Act stipulates: "Anyone who moves into an apartment must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in."
Failure to do so intentionally or negligently is an administrative offense and can be very expensive: A fine of up to one thousand euros can be imposed if someone fails to register correctly or on time.
So even late registration can result in fees, usually 20 to 30 euros. However, if you explain the reason for the delay in a friendly manner and can provide proof, for example a sick note, the employee at the citizens' office will certainly understand.
To register or re-register, you usually have to appear in person at the registration office. The new data is recorded there and a written confirmation of registration is issued. Family members can also be registered if they have lived in the same apartment and are moving with you.
Documents you should have with you: ID card or passport and ID cards of family members. For children who do not have a children's passport, the birth certificate must be presented. A certificate from the landlord is also required. Registration is free of charge.
All information on registration can be found on the municipal website www.lahr.de under Services from A to Z under the keyword "Register residence". You can also find the relevant information under the keyword "Ummeldung innerhalb der Gemeinde".
The citizens' office on Rathausplatz is open: Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesdays from 8.30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursdays from 8.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Currently, you can come in again without making an appointment. All persons aged 18 and over must wear an FFP2 mask.
By the way: As a rule, you do not have to deregister your place of residence. If you change your main residence and register at your new place of residence, this happens automatically. Exceptions: if you give up a secondary residence or emigrate abroad.
