12.08.2026 - City Takes Measures to Protect Public Health Swimming Prohibited in Stegmattensee

The city of Lahr has temporarily banned swimming in Stegmattensee Lake in Lahr for health reasons.

The lake’s water quality is tested weekly during the summer. These tests are based on the standards that apply to natural swimming areas, which are significantly stricter than, for example, the standards for quarry lakes. The most recent readings taken at Stegmattensee have prompted the city to impose a temporary swimming ban to prevent health risks.

Why were the limits exceeded?

Some bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, enter the water through excrement—for example, from ducks—while others, such as Pseudomonas, which are not even measured in quarry lakes, can sometimes multiply rapidly under very high water temperatures and turbidity. The current high rate of water loss due to evaporation and the anticipated rise in temperatures are exacerbating these risks.

What happens next?

The swimming ban is in effect immediately and for an indefinite period until the measured levels fall below the limits applicable to Stegmattensee. The precautionary swimming ban is indicated by warning signs.
