City park - rose garden - meerkats - monkeys - playground Lahr City Park - a destination for young and old alike
The Stadtpark Lahr is an extraordinary garden with remarkable trees, rare plants and an enchanting rose garden that is known and loved far beyond the city limits. This special park is an excursion destination for visitors of all ages and offers an exciting history of its creation as well as play opportunities and a feel-good factor.
The Stadtpark Lahr was originally the private garden of Lahr citizen Christian Wilhelm Jamm, who bequeathed it to the town after his death in 1875. Since then, the grounds have been repeatedly expanded and carefully enriched with a variety of different garden designs to a high horticultural standard. Today, the 4.5-hectare park offers garden fun for the whole family.

The heart of the park is the geometric rose garden, created in 1985 and divided by box hedges, with more than 250 varieties. The framework is formed by a large stock of old trees with numerous rarities.
Extensive rhododendron plants are just as much a part of this as the English-style perennial beds and ponds. In summer, the many palm trees, the Mediterranean flora of the Mediterranean terrace and the cactus garden give the city park a southern flair. In addition, annually changing plantings with thousands of tulips in spring, summer flowers, elaborate carpet beds maintained in the old tradition and magnificent dahlias in the fall provide a garden show all year round.

The animal enclosure with squirrel monkeys and meerkats
Feeding the squirrel monkeys is of course great fun.
Since the end of June 2017, the city park has been able to welcome squirrel monkeys alongside the popular meerkats. Raised in a Dutch monkey park, these cuddly neighbors of the meerkats are also a highlight at Stadtpark Lahr.
Contrary to what you might expect from Astrid Lindgren's children's stories, these cute animals are also wild animals. The Green and Environment Department of the City of Lahr therefore expressly points out that under no circumstances should you attempt to come into direct contact with the monkeys, for example by sticking your finger through the bars. This would inevitably end in a very painful bite.
As with all animals in the city park, you are not allowed to feed the saimiris. Only the zookeeper, who prepares a special diet for each animal that is beneficial to its health, is allowed to do so.
A look back: Meerkat children get names in 2018

The meerkat children in Lahr's city park have a name. The naming competition launched by the city council at the beginning of June 2018 generated a great response from the citizens of Lahr. An overwhelming 961 votes at the time ultimately resulted in the new meerkats being named Tick, Trick and Track. The head of administration narrowly avoided a meerkat namesake.
The numerous animals have always been a popular attraction in the city park. Children in particular enjoy the peacocks, birds, monkeys, fallow deer, rabbits, guinea pigs, geese, ducks, swans, a pony and other animals.
