Cycling facilities

Cycling is a healthy, environmentally-friendly and low-cost way of getting about. Cities where cycling is common offer their citizens a high degree of mobility and a good quality of life — which is why the city of Lahr also strives to systematically promote cycling.

The cycle path and footpath concept, adopted in 2012, is continuously implemented.

In November 2014, Lahr became a member of the regional pro-cycling organisation "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Fahrradfreundlicher Kommunen in Baden-Württemberg" (AGFK-BW) and since then has been making constant improvements with a view to winning the regional 'Cycle-Friendly Municipality' award in 2017

Modern cycle stands make parking your bike safe and easy

With a wide range of parking options, the city of Lahr is keen to offer cyclists a safe place to leave their bikes. In 2015, all the old, basic bike stands (known as “rim-killers”) in the city centre were replaced with modern stands, and additional parking was created. There are now just under 100 secure and convenient parking places around the pedestrian zone.

Use the cycle stands. Not only do they keep your bike safe, they also keep public paths and areas free for other users, such as people in wheelchairs, parents pushing buggies or people with a visual impairment.

You can see the exact locations of the bike stands and how many bikes they hold here.

Ein Service der Stadt Lahr". Am Ende des Schriftzugs ist das Logo der Stadt Lahr ein durchbrochener Rahmen mit einem gelben, blauen, roten und schwarzen Winkel zu sehen.
The lockable bike boxes at the railway station

In addition to numerous covered parking spaces at the railway station, there are 100 lockable bike boxes outside the station building that can be rented from the city of Lahr. Bike boxes accommodate two bicycles, so you share one with another user. The annual rent for half a box is 50.00 euro.

Note: The bike boxes are very popular and are currently all fully occupied. You can put your name on our waiting list, however. The waiting time at the moment is around six months.

Use the online form to sign up for a bike box.

As part of the redesign of the station forecourt, 50 new bike boxes with space for 100 bikes and two new covered areas for a total of 120 bikes will be installed. The work is scheduled for completion in the autumn of 2017.

Take your bike on the train for maximum mobility

In combination with the bus and train, cycling maximises mobility – for commuters travelling to work, for example, or for leisure travellers, tourers, or for a day out. The 'Rheintalbahn' route (Offenburg-Freiburg-Basel) allows you to take your bike with you free of charge on regional Deutsche Bahn trains on week days from 09.00, and at weekends and on public holidays. Take a look at the map for route-specific information about taking your bike with you on regional transport in Baden-Württemberg.

Another powerful partner is the 3-Löwen-Takt (three lions’ mode). The 3-Löwen-Takt database of stations provides precise location information about the facilities, access and connections at all the stations in the rail network (also available as an app).

You can find detailed information about cycle tourism in and around Lahr here.

If you need help planning your route, we recommend the Baden-Württemberg route planner. You can use it to plan relaxed, varied, and challenging leisure cycle rides, as well as your day-to-day routes. It provides detailed information for tourists and touring cyclists on the 19 official regional long-distance cycle routes. As well as a detailed description, including highlights along the way, you can look at the elevation profile and photos.
