plane at the BFAL
The Black Forest Airport Lahr (BFAL) can already look back on a long history. It was founded as the Zeppelin Airfield Lahr in 1913. After 1928 it served as a military airfield. From 1945 until 1967 it was a base for the French Army, subsequently it was used by the Canadian Air Force until 1994. Then in 1996 it was used for a new purpose as a commercial airfield. In the year 2000 it functioned as an alternate airport due to the renovation work being done at the Strasbourg Airport and in 40 days served around 25,000 passengers.
Cargo flight
The BFAL has the status of a special cargo airport and is equipped with a runway with a length of 3,000 meters and a load-bearing capacity of PCN (Pavement Classification Number) 100. Modern ILS (Instrument Landing System) equipment, large aprons, a freight center, and a large amount of commercial space are available.
Passenger flight
The BFAL is a commercial airfield for airplanes and helicopters up to 20 tons MTOW (Maximum Take-Off Weight). According to § 25 Air Traffic Law, air traffic with airplanes over 20 tons MTOW requires the approval of the Freiburg Regional Government Office (granted as a rule).
