The Sights
‘The sights’ of a town are its stone archive. They tell of what the town once was and wherein it sees itself today. In Lahr this comprises the remains of the Tiefburg castle and the old town wall which emerges from the urban landscape here and there. But the tradesmen’s homes on the Urteilsplatz or the prestige homes of the grand bourgeois dating from the 18th century also tell a story, if one knows how to read it. Thus, for example, the heavy use of sandstone in the neo-historical buildings erected around 1900 is closely connected with the building of the garrison barracks during 1898/1920. And that in turn was modelled on the Stork Tower. Connections are made, just as during a tour of the town, for which the following brief description of sights is intended to be a taster…
